GREENSBORO, N.C. - The George Washington softball squad dropped the opening game of the Blue/Gold Challenge to host UNC Greensboro on Thursday afternoon on the first of three days of competition.
The Colonials (9-9) put the ball in play - striking out just one time on the day - but were unable to string together a rally as the Spartans (17-10) yielded just three hits in the 6-0 shutout.
UNCG got out to an early 4-0 lead in the first with the help of a hit batter, three hits, a walk and a costly error.
Junior Monica Macchiarulo notched GW's first hit, an infield single, in the third frame, but her position on base was erased by a double play as the Colonials were unable to score.
GW starter Sarah Costlow gave up one run in both the third and the fourth before being relieved by freshman Jayme Cone.
In the top of the fifth, junior Paige Kovalsky singled through the left side, but did not advance as UNCG kept a firm grip on its 6-0 lead.
The Colonials' final hit came off the bat of senior Morgan Matetic in a pinch hit situation, but GW was again unable to advance beyond first base.
UNCG's Alicia Bazonski (10-2) got the win, tossing five innings of two-hit ball, and Danica Bishop closed the game as the Spartans did not yield a walk during the contest.
The Colonials return to the diamond on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Elon before facing Northern Illinois and UNCG on Saturday.
