WASHINGTON -- The GW men's basketball team will celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday evening as it plays host to George Mason in its home regular season finale. Tip is set for 8 p.m. with the game to be televised by ASN, which can be seen locally on CSN.
Seniors Patricio Garino, Kevin Larsen and Joe McDonald, along with graduate student Alex Mitola will all be honored in a pregame ceremony. The trio of Garino, Larsen and McDonald, which were part of head coach Mike Lonergan's first full recruiting class at GW, have led a revitalization of the Colonials basketball program, accounting for 80 wins in their careers so far.
GW has made back-to-back postseason appearances and recorded three straight 20-win seasons for just the second time in school history thanks in large part to Garino, Larsen and McDonald, while Mitola has played a key role this season after transferring to GW from Dartmouth.
All four players have scored more than 1,000 points in their careers, and will leave their names throughout the GW record books. Larsen is set to tie John Kopriva for the most games played in school history (128); Garino ranks third in career steals and 16th in scoring; and McDonald ranks sixth in career assists.
The Colonials (21-8, 10-6 A-10) defeated George Mason, 76-70, in Fairfax, Va., on Jan. 31, in a game that featured 10 lead changes and six ties.
Garino led the way for GW with a game-high 19 points and three steals on the defensive end, while Tyler Cavanaugh (15 points), Yuta Watanabe (11) and Larsen (10) also scored in double-figures. Larsen grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Cavanaugh's and Watanabe's eight boards apiece left them just shy of the double-double mark.
Garino connected on half of the Colonials' six triples in a perfect 3-for-3 effort from deep, while Mitola sank two treys in 22 minutes off the bench.
Also up for grabs in the game will be a point in the Revolutionary Rivalry, the year-long competition between the neighboring schools that culminates in the awarding of the Tri-Corner Hat Trophy. GW currently holds a 9-2 lead.
