RICHMOND, Va. -- GW travels to Richmond for its penultimate road game of the regular season Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in a game which will be televised by ASN, shown locally on MASN2.
The Colonials picked up their 20th win of the season with a 90-50 demolition of La Salle on Sunday, their largest margin of victory this season. GW set season highs in field goal percentage (.580), three-point field goal percentage (.700), three-pointers made (14), and free throw percentage (.947), all while holding the Explorers to .322 shooting which marked a season-low for a GW opponent.
Tyler Cavanaugh recorded his sixth 20-point effort of the season with a game-high 22 and was perfect from three-point range (3-3). Patricio Garino (19 points) didn't miss from the floor, going 7-of-7 overall and 4-of-4 from three-point territory to increase his season percentage from long distance to .482, which continues to lead the A-10.
In addition to its 14 three-pointers made, which was just two off the school record, GW connected on 18-of-19 at the free throw line and in the last two games the Colonials have hit 40-of-45 (.889). On the year, GW ranks 13th nationally with a .759 mark at the charity stripe. Cavanaugh is leading the effort with .876 (127-145) accuracy which ranks 20th nationally including fourth among forwards.
On Wednesday, the Colonials will be looking for revenge after the Spiders prevailed in a double-overtime thriller, 98-90, on Jan. 28th at the Smith Center. In that game, Paul Jorgensen sent the game to overtime with a banked-in buzzer-beating three at the end of regulation after GW fought back from a 13-point second half deficit.
After regulation ended knotted at 74-74, the Colonials and Spiders didn't budge in the first overtime session, as Richmond forced the next overtime session with a three-point play to tie the game at 85-85 with less than 20 seconds to go.
The Spiders then pulled away in the second overtime frame to hand GW its first home loss of the season.
All five GW starters scored in double figures in the contest, paced by Garino's and Kevin Larsen's 17 apiece. Larsen also had 10 boards for a double-double and a game-high tying five assists without committing a turnover. Cavanaugh recorded a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Yuta Watanabe (14) and Joe McDonald (13) rounded out the 77 points GW got from its starting five.
