PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The George Washington softball team wrapped its opening weekend of play on Sunday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Classic with a loss to Notre Dame.
The Colonials served as the visiting team against Notre Dame - a squad that a week ago ranked No. 24 in the nation.
Notre Dame got out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first on three hits with the help of two walks. A two-run home run in the second increased the Irish's lead to 5-0.
A single and another home run in the third ended freshman starter Jayme Cone's day in the circle as sophomore Ashley Pilcher came on in relief, allowing one run before the close of the inning to put Notre Dame (7-3) ahead, 8-0, after three.
The Irish then added four more in the fourth on five hits and a walk.
Despite a single by junior Monica Macchiarulo in the fourth and another by sophomore Alana Anderson in the fifth, the Colonials were unable to score. With a 12-0 lead in the middle of the fifth, Notre Dame took the victory by virtue of the run rule.
Macchiarulo led GW during the Mary Nutter Classic, batting .429 (6-for-14) with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday in doubleheader action at Norfolk State.
