PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The George Washington softball team dropped the first two games of the three-day Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday.
The Colonials (0-2) will take on Pacific (4-2) and Loyola Marymount (4-2) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time, respectively.
In GW's first game of the day, the Colonials fell to Utah Valley, 11-1. Senior Morgan Matetic led the Colonials with a 2-for-2 effort and the second triple of her career, while junior Megan Linn also posted a multi-hit game (2-for-4, 1 run).
Utah Valley got off to an early lead in the top of the first as three walks, a hit batter and an error led to three runs. In the Colonials' half of the inning, junior Monica Macchiarulo recorded GW's first hit of the season on a single to short, but was eventually stranded as the inning ended.
Freshman starter Jayme Cone got into a bases loaded jam in the second inning before sophomore hurler Sarah Costlow entered the circle. Two consecutive wild pitches allowed Utah Valley to take a 5-0 lead after two stanzas, but Costlow settled in to hold the Wolverines to a scoreless third.
The Colonials tallied their first run of 2016 in the third, as Linn led off with a single to short and advanced to second on a Macchiarulo walk and continued to third on an error by the catcher. A passed ball then plated Linn to put the score at 5-1 through three.
Costlow allowed just one run over the next three innings before Utah Valley increased its lead with a five-run seventh on four hits and two Colonials' miscues to put the final score at 11-1.
In game two, the Colonials served as the visiting team against Arkansas. Senior Carlee Gray notched a two-out single to right field in the top of the first, but GW could not bring her home before the inning ended.
Arkansas went out to an early, 3-0, lead in the bottom of the first as a triple, double and home run plated a trio of Razorbacks before junior starter Paige Kovalsky retired the side.
Arkansas added one more run in the third before back-to-back home runs headlined a three-run fourth inning, increasing the lead to 7-0 over the Colonials. One unearned run in the fifth would enact the mercy rule and close the game with a final score of 8-0.
The Colonials continue the Mary Nutter Classic with a pair of games on Saturday. All games throughout the tournament will be live streamed by FloSoftball.
