TIPPING OFF: GW is set to play its third game in five days, and fourth in nine days, as it faces Temple at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
LAST TIME OUT: Just 24 hours after defeating USF, 68-67 at home, the Colonials fell to Florida State in the BB&T Classic on Sunday at Verizon Center, 67-48. Freshman Kevin Marfo came off the bench to set career highs with 18 points and nine rebounds, and GW held a 52-42 edge on the boards, but was undone by 22.6 percent shooting from the field. Graduate student Tyler Cavanaugh saw his streak of scoring in double figures in every game as a Colonial come to an end at 46 as he was held to eight points.
ABOUT TEMPLE: Temple has won five straight, including an 89-86 win over FSU, and victories over West Virginia and at Saint Joseph's, to bring their season record to 6-2. Four Owls are scoring in double figures led by junior forward Obi Enechionyia who is averaging 19.9 points and 7.9 rebounds and shooting 48 percent from three-point range.
SERIES HISTORY: Temple has won seven in a row against GW and holds a 53-16 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to Jan. 8, 1917. The Owls won that initial meeting, 40-27, in Philadelphia and have won 25 of 32 home games. The most recent meeting was a 90-77 Temple win in the second round of the Postseason NIT on March 22, 2015, while GW's last victory came on Feb. 17, 2007 (84-72 at home).
GOOD ON THE GLASS: GW has made a habit of outrebounding its opponents, finishing with a positive margin on the glass in seven of nine games. For the year, the Colonials have a +7.1 margin which stands as the best in the Atlantic 10 and ranks 37th nationally. GW is also first in the league in offensive rebounds (13.1/game), and second in offensive rebound percentage (.359) and defensive rebound percentage (.748).
AT THE CHARITY STRIPE: No team in the Atlantic 10 has knocked down more freebies than GW, which has connected on 176 (19.6/game) this season. That number also ranks 12th nationally. The Colonials have made more free throws than the opponent has attempted in six games and for the season, have 176 makes to opponents' 137 attempts. Spearheading that effort has been Jaren Sina, who is 25-of-27 (.926).
NOTABLE: Cavanaugh continues to pace the team in scoring (17.0 pg), rebounding (7.4 pg) and assists (22) ... second-leading scorer Yuta Watanabe has missed the last four games due to a calf injury ... Patrick Steeves missed the last two due to injury ... Toro is averaging a team-best 14.0 rebounds per 40 minutes ... three Colonials are connecting at better than 80 percent from the FT line: Sina (.926), Hart (.875) and Cavanaugh (.836).
