BOSTON -- Graduate student forward Tyler Cavanaugh has been named to the preseason watch list for the Lute Olson Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons.
Cavanaugh is one of 50 players on the list, including six from the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Syracuse native, who was also a preseason first team All-A-10 selection, averaged 16.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season while shooting .417 from 3-point range and recording 11 double-doubles.
Cavanaugh provided a consistent scoring threat by reaching double figures in all 38 games last season, leading the Colonials to a school-record 28 wins and the Postseason NIT Championship.
In the NIT, he was named Most Outstanding Player after averaging 19.4 points and 9.0 rebounds in five games. He also shot .500 (11-22) from 3-point range and had three double-doubles in the tournament. The recipient of the 2017 Lute Olson Award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet on April 31 in Phoenix, Arizona, site of the men's division I basketball championship.
Cavanaugh and the Colonials, who dispatched Bowie State 86-80 in exhibition play last Saturday, open the 2016-17 regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. vs. UMES in the Charles E. Smith Center.
