TIPPING OFF: The George Washington men's basketball team continues a difficult stretch of non-conference action as it welcomes the Big Ten's Penn State into the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday. Tip is set for 4 p.m. with the game to be streamed on RaiseHigh Live.
STREAKING AT HOME: GW owns a 27-game non-conference home winning streak, which goes back nearly four years. The Colonials' last loss to a non-league foe came at the hands of Kansas State on Dec. 8, 2012 and since then GW has recorded victories over the likes of Virginia, Florida, Seton Hall, Georgia and others. Overall, the Colonials are 45-6 at home since 2013-14 which is the best mark in the Atlantic 10.
LAST TIME OUT: Tyler Cavanaugh recorded his third double-double of the season with game highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Yuta Watanabe added 18 points, two blocks, two assists and a steal, but GW fell to UAB, 81-74, in the CBE Classic on Tuesday in Kansas City. Jaren Sina also reached double figures in scoring with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.
SERIES HISTORY: GW is 12-19 all-time against Penn State in a series that dates back to 1907. Last season the Colonials downed the Nittany Lions, 76-66, at home to pick up their first home win over a Big Ten team since Dec. 7, 1977. In that game, Cavanaugh tallied team-highs of 18 points and 10 boards while Watanabe had 14 points -- all in the first half -- on 4-of-7 from 3-point territory.
ABOUT PENN STATE: The Nittany Lions own a 3-3 record following a 72-59 win over Colgate on Wednesday. Penn State dropped its season opener to Albany and fell to then-No. 1 Duke and then-No. 24 Cincinnati in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off, while its other wins have come over Duquesne and Grand Canyon. Junior guard Shep Garner leads the team with 15.0 points per game while freshman guard Tony Carr (14.7 ppg) and junior forward Payton Banks (12.2 ppg) aren't far behind.
