Men's Basketball Plays Host to Siena on Tuesday

TIPPING OFF: After opening the 2016-17 season with a 75-71 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday, the GW men's basketball team returns to play on Tuesday as it plays host to Siena at the Charles E. Smith Center. Tip is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen on RaiseHigh Live.
LAST TIME OUT: Tyler Cavanaugh led the Colonials past MDES with game-high totals of 24 points and 10 rebounds, while also connecting at a perfect 9-of-9 clip at the free throw line. Yuta Watanabe added 18 points with a 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe, as GW made 29-of-34 freebies in the game, to far surpass the Hawks' 12-of-14 line. Jaren Sina and Matt Hart had four assists apiece as the Colonials helped out on 16 of 19 field goals in the game.
THE CBE CLASSIC: Tuesday's game marks the first of four GW will play connected to the College Basketball Experience (CBE) Hall of Fame Classic. The Colonials host Siena and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday for their two on-campus games, before traveling to Kansas City where they will face Georgia on Monday and either Kansas or UAB on Tuesday.
The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame hosts an Induction Celebration on the Friday before the tournament in Kansas City, celebrating Hall of Fame collegiate careers. The tournament, in partnership with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), was initially established in 2001 as the Guardians Classic.
ABOUT SIENA: The Saints were picked to finish second in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference behind defending league champion Monmouth, and return their top five scorers from last year's team which went 21-13. Seniors Brett Bisping, Javion Ogunyemi and Marcus Wright were all named to the preseason All-MAAC team. In Siena's season-opening 89-78 win over Cornell, Wright had 31 points, Bisping had 23 and Ogunyemi had 13.
SERIES HISTORY: The teams have met just three times, with Siena holding a 2-1 advantage. The first meeting came in 1981, an 88-70 GW home victory, before the Saints took a 106-99 win at home in 1998, and a 94-91 victory at the Smith Center in 1999.
PROMOTION: GW Athletics is partnering with Sustainable DC, which is the District of Columbia's plan to be the healthiest, greenest, and most livable city in the United States, for a "Go Green" game. A number of recycling initiatives will be in place at the Smith Center.
CONSISTENT CAVANAUGH: In his 24-point, 10-rebound effort on Friday, Cavanaugh reached double-figure scoring for the 39th time in 39 career games with GW. His last game where he failed to reach double figures was for Wake Forest on March 13, 2014. Cavanaugh also notched his 11th 20-point outing and 12th double-double with the Colonials.
COLONIAL DEBUTS: Against Eastern Shore, six of the 10 players that saw action were making their GW debut. Redshirt junior Jaren Sina and freshman Collin Smith had starting roles, while graduate student Patrick Steeves and freshmen Jair Bolden, Kevin Marfo and Arnaldo Toro came off the bench.
