WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer squad fell in a 1-0 battle to Atlantic 10 rival George Mason on Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
With two games remaining in the regular season, GW has clinched a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament as one of the league's top-eight squads for the fourth-consecutive season.
The Colonials (10-5-2, 4-2-2 A-10) tallied 10 shots on the day but could not find the back of the net as a first-half goal by the Patriots proved to be the difference maker in the Revolutionary Rivalry matchup.
GW issued the first three shots of the day, nearly taking an early lead in the 14th minute after redshirt senior Brooke Bean sent the ball into the box off of a set piece after a Mason yellow card. Senior MacKenzie Cowley made a one-touch attempt but missed just wide left as the match remained scoreless.
Mason (12-5, 6-2 A-10) answered with four shots in quick succession, all in the 17th minute, but GW's defense blocked each one.
The Buff and Blue had another good opportunity in the 27th minute, when senior Lina Proska found Cowley in the box. Cowley then sent a laser shot toward the net, but Mason's keeper slapped the ball away.
The Patriots broke through in the 32nd minute on a corner kick play. Kaila Williams sent the corner to Hugrun Olafsdottir just outside the box, who then served a well-struck ball deep into the box. Sarah Hardison redirected the ball from close range into the net to put Mason up 1-0.
The Colonials kept the pressure on as Bean sent a header on goal when Proska dished a pass into the box after a corner kick in the 35th minute, but another save by Mason preserved the Patriots' lead at the half.
GW had an opportunity in the 64th minute when redshirt junior Ivana Szwejkowski found Cowley in the box, but Cowley's quick shot was tipped away by Mason's keeper.
The Colonials earned a pair of corner kicks beginning in the 68th minute, but GW's final shot of the day by freshman Deena DeSilva was blocked as Mason took a 1-0 victory.
Cowley finished with a game-high six shots in the match - three on goal - as the Colonials were edged in total shots, 11-10.
Prior to Sunday's match, the Colonials honored nine soon-to-be graduates in a Senior Day ceremony.
The Colonials host Rhode Island on Thursday for GW's final home match of the year before wrapping the regular season at Saint Louis on Oct. 30.
