The George Washington women's tennis squad completed day two of the fall season-opening Saint Joseph's and Elon Invitationals on Saturday. Singles and doubles competition for both tournaments will conclude on Sunday.
Freshman Victoria Kogan began singles action at the Saint Joseph's Invitational with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 defeat of La Salle's Alexandra Santerelli in Flight 2 first-round play. The rookie then battled to triumph over Delaware's Annie Jaskulski, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-6, to reach Sunday's flight semifinals.
Junior Allison Hansen also tallied a victory in singles play, posting a straight-set win over Loyola (Md.)'s Nicole Eberle, 6-2, 6-3, to earn a Flight 3 semifinal berth.
Senior Egle Jakuciunaite fell to Delaware's Sarah Hall, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, in the Flight 4 quarterfinals after a first-round bye.
Kogan and Hansen will take on Saint Joseph's Maureen Devlin and Norfolk State's Marta Gomar, respectively, in flight semifinal action on Sunday.
Jakuciunaite and partner Ana Popovic of Norfolk State will compete in the Flight 2 consolation finals on Sunday to conclude GW's doubles play.
Singles play resumed on Saturday at the Elon Invitational with a rain-altered schedule. Sophomore Teodora Radosavljevic downed Wake Forest's Xue Zang, 7-6 (4), 7-5, in the Maroon Flight quarterfinals before triumphing over Winthrop's Lauren Proctor, 6-3, 7-5, to earn a spot in Sunday's final against Wake Forest's Joanna Zalewski. Sophomore Marie-Louise Decamps won her Maroon Flight consolation quarterfinal bout with Liberty's Aleksandra Panchenko and will face UNC-Greensboro's Soumeya Anane in semifinal action. Consolation finals will not be played due to weather-related schedule changes.
In Phoenix Flight play, rookie Diana Kussainova went the distance to defeat Emory's Bridget Harding, 6-4, 1-6, 10-1, in the quarterfinals before downing Liberty's Emily Grovenveld, 6-4, 5-7 (10-5), in a semifinals bout. Kussainova will take on Elon's Erica Braschi in Sunday's final.
Junior Taylor Nederlander is scheduled to compete in the Acorn Flight consolation quarterfinals against a to-be-determined opponent.
In doubles action, the duo of Nederalnder and Kussainova will face Emory's Harding and Katarina Su in a consolation match for third place in the Phoenix Flight.
