A product of Manassas, Virginia, freshman Collin Goss adds more local talent to GW as one of three Colonials with Joe McDonald and Kevin Larsen who played high school ball in the DMV. Goss ranked in the top three of the D.C. Metro area's Interstate Athletic Conference in scoring, rebounding and blocks during his senior season at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School and was named an Honorable Mention All-Met selection by The Washington Post. A 6-foot-10 forward, Goss looks to become a force in the paint with the help of college-level strength and conditioning training.
GWsports.com sat down with Goss during his summer workouts to learn about his experiences through the first few weeks on campus.
GWsports.com: What are your first impressions of being a student-athlete at GW?
Collin Goss: It's definitely hard work. We wake up early, work hard all day, you don't really go back to your dorm until late at night, but now that I'm in a routine and getting the hang of it, it's fun to hang out with all the guys and get better as a team.
GWsports.com: What has been the biggest adjustment to your game since you arrived on campus?
CG: Getting used to banging into bigger guys, guys like Tyler Cavanaugh and Kevin Larsen who weigh around 250-260. I'm about 220 right now, so I've just got to get used to being around bigger guys in the paint.
GWsports.com: How would you rate your level of play in the Kenner league?
CG: The Kenner League has been good, and playing pickup with the guys has been fun. I'm getting a lot of good minutes running up and down the court and getting used to the college-level speed so it's been a good experience for me.
GWsports.com: How have the strength and conditioning workouts been so far? How do they compare to your previous training?
CG: It's not just a lot of heavy lifting here. It's also a bunch of agility and flexibility training, which is something I wasn't really used to. I put on about five pounds in just the first two weeks after getting to campus, so it's going pretty well.
GWsports.com: What summer classes are you taking?
CG: An online history class and a voice and diction class. They're going well. The voice and diction class only has five kids in it total, so it's been small and not that bad to speak in front of them.
GWsports.com: What's been the biggest adjustment living on campus compared to living at home?
CG: I guess you could say I'm kind of lucky, or spoiled, that I only live about 30 minutes away, so whenever I need something my mom can just bring it up. But just being good with time is the biggest adjustment. Jordan Roland is good, we both set multiple alarms in the morning just trying not to be late for anything.
GWsports.com: What are you most looking forward to once the fall semester starts?
CG: I'm ready for the other students to get on campus so I can see what it's really like during the day and not just walking around and just seeing the basketball team. It'll be nice to get to talk to other students.
GWsports.com: What are some of your personal goals for the upcoming season?
CG: I definitely want to be a contributor my first year. I don't want to just sit on the bench, I want to help the team out, get some solid minutes in or give some of the older guys a break if they're tired.
GWsports.com: What is your favorite part about living in Washington, DC?
CG: I really like history, so it's nice to have all the monuments around that I can just walk down to whenever I want. We do our morning runs down by the monuments and it's nice to be around such a rich history of our country.
GWsports.com: Who would you say is your funniest teammate?
CG: Matt Cimino is really funny, or Anthony Swan. They're always sharing funny Vines, or telling jokes and are easy to talk to.
