Alex Mitola, a 5-foot-11 guard from Florham Park, New Jersey, has joined the GW men's basketball program after graduating from Dartmouth. Mitola will be immediately eligible to compete for the Colonials in 2015-16.
"Alex is a welcome addition to the GW Basketball Family," said Head Coach Mike Lonergan. "I have known him since recruiting him at Vermont five years ago. He has had a good career in the Ivy League, hitting big shots and being one of the top free throw shooters. Alex will be able to stretch the defense for us with his outside shooting ability and he gives us another strong ball-handler. An excellent student who graduated from Dartmouth with an Economics degree in just three years, he is immediately eligible to play for us and gives us additional leadership, high basketball IQ and experience. We are excited that Alex has chosen GW to further his education and finish his collegiate playing career."
Mitola added, "I am thrilled for the opportunity to join a phenomenal school and basketball program at GW as a graduate student, and I am looking forward to helping the team improve on its recent success!"
A double-digit scorer in all three seasons at Dartmouth, Mitola owns a career .389 (202-of-518) shooting clip from behind the three-point arc, and a .857 career free throw percentage (169-of-197).
A high school teammate of fellow transfer Jaren Sina from Seton Hall, Mitola led the state of New Jersey with 119 three-pointers while shooting at a 44 percent clip from long range during his senior scholastic season.
