WASHINGTON - Jaren Sina, a 6-foot-2 guard from Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, has joined the GW men's basketball program after competing for Seton Hall from 2013-15. Sina will sit out the 2015-16 season per NCAA requirements and have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2016-17.
"I'm excited to welcome Jaren into our GW basketball family," said Head Coach Mike Lonergan. "Jaren is an extremely gifted young man who shares our program's values of commitment and hard work both on and off the court. As a player, he is a terrific facilitator and shooter, but more importantly I think he's a great student and teammate who will play an important leadership role when he becomes eligible in 2016-17."
"I chose GW because of the high-level education. I have an opportunity to go college in the most powerful city in the world!" said Sina. "Athletically, I get to play in one of the best conferences in the country and for one of the best coaching staffs in the country! I am really excited for what the future holds for me as a student-athlete at GW!"
In 58 career games at Seton Hall, Sina made 42 starts, averaged 6.4 points and 2.3 assists, and shot 35 percent behind the arc (79-227) and 78 percent at the foul line (77-99). He earned Big East All-Rookie Team and Academic All-Star honors in 2013-14 when he averaged 6.0 points and 2.4 assists and shot 38 percent from three-point range (39-102) in 34 games played.
In 24 games played as a sophomore in 2014-15, Sina averaged 7.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, made 40 threes and helped the Pirates to a 15-9 record, including a title at the Paradise Jam, a 12-2 start and the Hall's highest national ranking since 2001.
Sina, who was born in Portugal, starred at North Jersey's Gill St. Bernard's School, amassing Somerset County all-time records of 2,146 points and 861 assists during his scholastic career. He led the Knights to a combined 73-15 record from 2010-13 and was three-time All-State and Somerset County Player of the Year selection. In those three seasons, Sina connected on 324 three pointers, including 117 threes along with 21.3 points and 9.1 assists per game as a senior. He was the No. 91 rated recruit in the Class of 2013 according to ESPN.com.
