GW Softball Drops Road Finale at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. - The George Washington softball team (22-23, 4-14 A-10) fell, 5-1, in game three of an Atlantic 10 conference series with defending champion Fordham (28-18, 14-4 A-10) on Sunday afternoon at Bahoshy Field.
A lead off home run by Fordham in the first put GW in an early hole, and four straight walks and a sac fly added two more in the second to give the Rams a 3-0 lead after two.
Freshman hurler Ashley Pilcher, who came on in relief of starter Paige Kovalsky, worked a scoreless third for the Colonials in just her third appearance of the season. A single, stolen base and a double in the fourth tacked on one more for Fordham.
The Buff and Blue got on the board in the fifth after senior Samantha Dos Santos led off the inning with a walk. Freshman Rochelle Draper then reached on an error, and a double steal put a pair of Colonials in scoring position for sophomore Megan Linn, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate GW's run.
In the fifth, the Rams' Paige Ortiz doubled and scored on an RBI single. The host's starting pitcher Rachel Gillen held the Colonials scoreless for the remainder of the contest and earned the complete-game victory.
Pilcher tossed 4.2 innings of relief, yielding just two runs.
The Buff and Blue tallied three hits on the day, one each by sophomore Bradleigh Breland, junior Carlee Gray and senior Victoria Valos. With the hit, Valos ties GW's all-time career hits record with 202 - a mark set by two-time Olympic medal-winning bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor ('07).
The Colonials, now mathematically unable to earn a spot at the six-team Atlantic 10 Championship, conclude their 2015 season at home as they host Rhode Island on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game A-10 series. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m., with a Senior Day recognition of Valos, Dos Santos and McKinley Tretler to take place prior to first pitch.
