WASHINGTON - Senior Victoria Valos drove in four runs as the George Washington softball squad downed Cornell, 8-7, on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (16-13) scored in five of their six offensive innings to stay ahead of the late surge staged by the Red Storm (8-11).
In the bottom of the first, with sophomore Bradleigh Breland on second, Valos poked an opposite-field single to plate the first run for the Bluff and Blue give GW an early 1-0 lead.
Three more crossed the plate in the third after freshman Alana Anderson singled and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt from classmate Aiyana Leal-Robles. Sophomore Megan Linn took one for the team to reach first base, and Valos followed with another RBI single to the right side. With runners on the corners, junior Carlee Gray emptied the bases with her team-high fourth triple of the season to give GW a 4-0 lead after three.
Cornell got one back in the fourth on three hits, but the Colonials answered back in their half of the inning when senior Samantha Dos Santos tripled and scored on Anderson's sacrifice fly. GW tacked on one more in the fifth with the help of an error by the Big Red to take a 6-1 lead.
Cornell came within one in the sixth, posting four runs on three hits and two errors by the Buff and Blue.
The Colonials added some insurance in the sixth when Valos plated two more with a bases loaded single to put the score at 8-5.
The Big Red made for an interesting final inning as a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out. A single and a fielder's choice allowed two to touch home for Cornell, but sophomore Paige Kovalsky induced a grounder with the bases loaded to wrap the game and secure an 8-7 GW victory.
Kovalsky (5-0) notched her second consecutive complete game victory after going all the way in Tuesday's win over UMBC.
Valos led GW at the plate, posting a 3-for-3 effort with a walk, four RBIs and a run scored. Anderson (2-for-2, 1 RBI, 2 R) recorded the only other multi-hit game for the Colonials, while three others chipped in for the team's eight total hits.
The Colonials next travel to Massachusetts (6-15, 1-5 A-10) for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at the Minutewomen's Sortino Field, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday and concluding with a single game on Saturday.
