WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of games against Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (14-13, 0-4 A-10) fell in game one, 9-1, in five innings before the Bonnies (6-12, 2-3 A-10) took the nightcap by a score of 6-2.
In game one, St. Bona jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a trio of hits off of freshman starter Sarah Costlow. The Bonnies tacked on five more in the second with the help of four hits, two errors and a walk to build a 7-0 lead that would prove too large for the Colonials to overcome.
St. Bonaventure increased the lead in the fifth after sophomore Paige Kovalsky came on in relief of Costlow. A lead off walk, sacrifice bunt and wild pitch put a runner on third with one out. The next batter walked and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position for Emily McDonough, who singled through the left side for a pair of RBIs to complete the game one scoring for the Bonnies.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Colonials posted a run after senior pinch hitter McKinley Tretler doubled to right and was relieved on the bases by sophomore Marissa Mangini. The speedy runner tagged up on a fly ball by sophomore Megan Linn to come within 60 feet of scoring. An error by St. Bonaventure plated Mangini, but GW's scoring would end there and the visitors would enact the mercy rule to secure a 9-1 victory.
In game two with Costlow again getting the start, the Colonials held St. Bonaventure scoreless until the third inning. Then a trio of singles and a sacrifice fly did the damage, giving the Bonnies a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, St. Bonaventure posted two more runs, this time after McDonough led off the inning with a double and scored on a base hit. The second run came on a bases loaded walk to put the Bonnies up by four.
The Colonials got two back in the fifth, all with two outs. With one out to spare, freshman Morgan Rinehart laced a single to center and swiped second. Linn then doubled to left center, driving in Rinehart and putting herself in scoring position. Speedy sophomore Bradleigh Breland beat out an infield single to score Linn and cut the deficit in half before the inning ended.
After the late game GW surge, St. Bonaventure added on two insurance runs in the sixth on a 2-RBI double to end the day of scoring. The Colonials were unable to answer back and ultimately fell, 6-2.
During the two games, the Colonials put the ball in play often, striking out just two times in each contest, but were unable to string hits together and outscore the Bonnies.
McDonough led all hitters, going 7-for-8 on the day with three RBIs and five runs scored for St. Bonaventure.
Breland led the Colonials at the plate, posting a 3-for-6 effort with two RBIs.
Costlow (11-11) tossed a complete second game and hurled 11 innings on the day.
Senior Victoria Valos extended her on-base streak to 16 consecutive games in the day's opener, but was unable to reach base in the second half of the double-dip. Valos' streak matches the mark set by former teammate Lauren Wilson ('12), good for sixth on the all-time list.
The Colonials will head to Baltimore, Maryland to take on UMBC on Tuesday afternoon before hosting Cornell on Wednesday for a mid-week matinee beginning at 3 p.m.
