WASHINGTON - Freshman pitcher Sarah Costlow earned two victories over Lafayette to extend the George Washington softball team's winning streak to seven on Friday at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy as part of the Capital Invitational.
The Colonials (12-8) triumphed in the first game, 6-1, before defeating the Leopards (0-11), in a back-and-forth 5-4 effort in the back-end of the doubleheader.
In game one, GW scored first for the ninth consecutive game by posting three runs in the first. Sophomore Marissa Mangini walked then stole second before junior Morgan Matetic was plunked and took her free base. Mangini stole third and drew an errant throw by the catcher to take home for the Colonials' first run. Sophomore Paige Kovalsky plated Matetic with an RBI single and was brought home on a triple by Gray to give the Buff and Blue a 3-0 lead after one.
The Colonials tacked on another run in the third with two outs, as three straight singles led to another RBI for Gray.
Another GW insurance run came in the fifth after senior Victoria Valos led off the inning with a double and scored on a Kovalsky single.
Lafayette posted its only run of the game in the sixth, after going three innings without a base runner, when a trio of two-out singles led to the lone run for the Leopards.
In the sixth, the Colonials used aggressive base running to take advantage of a Lafayette miscue for the final run of the game. Sophomore Megan Linn singled and stole second, then reached third on a wild pitch. Valos forced an error by the third baseman to plate Linn before the inning ended.
Costlow, who came on in relief with two outs in the first inning, tossed 6.1 innings of four-hit ball to secure the victory, walking just one batter.
In game two, Lafayette beat GW to the scoreboard after a walk and a single led to an RBI double by Bryn Gornick, leaving runners on second and third. Another walk loaded the bases and an error by Costlow allowed the second run of the inning to cross the plate.
In the third, Valos walked with one out and moved to third after the Leopards' right fielder fumbled a Matatic fly ball. Kovalsky then drove in her third run of the day with a single to right. With runners on the corners as a result of junior Carlee Gray's fielder's choice, a successful first-and-third play was put into action, allowing Kovalsky to score while Gray delayed the third out with a run-down between first and second to tie the score at two runs apiece.
The Colonials took the lead in the fourth as senior Samantha Dos Santos doubled and scored on a Linn RBI single. GW remained on top only briefly, as Lafayette knotted the score at three in the sixth as a pair of singles led to a run for the Leopards.
The Buff and Blue answered back with the deciding blow in the bottom half of the inning, when Gray laced her second triple of the day and scored on a booming home run by Dos Santos, her second of the year.
Lafayette would get one back in the top of the seventh, but could not overtake the Colonials, as the score finished in GW's favor, 5-4.
Costlow (9-6) tossed her sixth complete game of the season to earn her second win of the day and sixth of the week, allowing three earned runs and seven hits in six innings of work in game two.
Dos Santos and Gray each finished the day with a strong 3-for-4 effort with two RBIs, while Gray recorded the first pair of triples of her career.
Kovalsky wrapped the day batting 4-for-6 with a team-high three RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Valos and Linn had two hits apiece.
The Colonials' seven-game win streak is the longest since GW won 12 straight from April 6-24, 2013.
The Buff and Blue will host Princeton in its home opener at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Sunday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. Fans can follow along with GameTracker for game one and game two .
