GW Softball Ends Citrus Classic With Win

ORLANDO, Fla. - The George Washington softball team wrapped a five-game weekend with a win over Morgan State, 8-2, on Sunday on the final day of the Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Colonials (4-7) end with a 3-2 tournament record.
GW struck first when junior Morgan Matetic smacked her second home run of the weekend, plating sophomore Megan Linn to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead in the first.
The Buff and Blue tacked on another in the third after Linn earned her second free pass of the game and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Bradleigh Breland. Senior Victoria Valos notched a RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Linn for the third run of the game.
Starting pitcher Paige Kovalsky, getting the ball for the third game of the weekend, kept Morgan State's bats silent until the bottom of the third when a single sandwiched by walks loaded the bases with one out, bringing freshman hurler Sarah Costlow on in relief. Alyssa Blanco hit a RBI single, but the Colonials got out of the inning without further damage.
The Bears would score one more in the fourth for their second and final run of the game to come within one of GW.
The Colonials made two quick outs to start the fifth, but the side would not be retired quietly. Breland stroked her second single of the game and was moved to second on a walk to Valos. Breland then stole third and home for the first of three runs of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, a walk and two hits led to two more runs for the Buff and Blue, for the final score of 8-2.
Kovalsky continued her hot hitting at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon, improving to a team-best 11-for-23 (.478) on the season. The Colonials showed confidence on the bases with seven stolen bases as a team on the day.
The Colonials return to the diamond next weekend when they head to Norfolk, Virginia for the Spartan Clash, where they will face Norfolk State (0-0) and Delaware (5-5).
