GW Softball Falls in Saturday Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The George Washington softball team posted seven runs in two games, but dropped both ends of a doubleheader at UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon.
GW (1-5) nearly staged a comeback win, but ultimately fell, 5-4, to UNCG (4-3) in game one before dropping a 5-3 decision in the nightcap.
GW scored first in the opener, taking advantage of a UNCG miscue to notch an unearned run in the top of the second. The Spartans answered back with four in the bottom of the second on a Dominique Madruga grand slam and added another round-tripper in the third to go up by four, 5-1.
The Colonials would answer with a three-run fourth inning on three passed balls and a two RBI single by senior Samantha Dos Santos, but could not surge into the lead and fell, 5-4. Sophomores Paige Kovalsky and Bradleigh Breland and junior Carlee Gray each finished the game with a pair of hits for the Colonials.
In game two, GW once again scored first with the help of UNCG miscues in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Dos Santos reached base on an infield single to plate a run. A walk to sophomore Monica Macchiarulo drove in another run to put the Colonials ahead, 2-0, through three.
UNCG responded in its half of the inning, managing one unearned run to cut the deficit in half. A home run by sophomore Megan Linn, her second hit of the game, in the fourth gave the Colonials a 3-1 lead, but the Spartans would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at three.
Two more Spartan runs in the fifth on three hits proved too much for the Colonials, as UNCG would come out on top by a final score of 5-3.
The Colonials will travel to Orlando, Florida, next weekend to face Virginia (3-6) and Morgan State (0-0) in the Citrus Classic.
