WASHINGTON - George Washington women's soccer wraps its non-conference road schedule this weekend when it travels to Drexel and Delaware State. Action at the Dragons' Vidas Field is slated for Friday at 7 p.m., and Sunday's match at the Hornets' Alumni Stadium will kick off at 1 p.m.
GW, which is off to its best start in program history with an overall record of 5-1-0, currently ranks atop the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Poll and is receiving votes in the Top 25 National Poll. The Colonials are coming off a 1-1 weekend in which they convincingly downed previously unbeaten ETSU, 3-1, before suffering their first loss of the season at Georgetown, 1-0, in a double-overtime battle. Sophomore MacKenzie Cowley led all scorers with two goals against the Bucs, while redshirt junior Nicole Belfonti added a tally as the Buff and Blue remained perfect at home.
With four shutout victories to its credit, GW leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks eighth in NCAA Division I with a 0.329 goals-against average. The Colonials are fifth in D-I in save percentage (0.923) and are tied for 19th in the nation in shutout percentage (0.667). On the offensive end, GW ranks atop the conference and is tied for 44th in the country with 2.33 goals per game and sits second in the league with 6.33 points per game.
Cowley paces the squad with four goals and an assist for nine points on the season, while junior Kristi Abbate (2g, 2a) has registered six points. Senior Meg Murphy and Belfonti have tallied five points apiece on two goals and a helper, and junior Kyla Ridley (2g) has four points on the year. Redshirt freshman Miranda Horn is nearly perfect between the posts with just one goal allowed against 63 shots faced for a 0.18 goals-against average. She has made 23 saves to amass a .958 save percentage.
Drexel (1-5-1) continues its five-game homestand when it welcomes GW on Friday evening. The Dragons are coming off a 3-0 loss at No. 17 Clemson and a 2-2 draw against Syracuse last week. Lauren Stollar, who scored both goals against the Orange, leads Drexel with four points, while Megan Hammaker has scored a goal and dished out an assist for three points. Goalkeeper Kelsie Fye has set aside 27 shots for a .692 save percentage and allowed 12 goals for 1.62 goals-against average. GW won the only prior meeting with Drexel, 3-1, during the 2010 season at the Blue Hen Classic.
Delaware State (2-6-0) defeated Wagner, 1-0, on the road on Sunday after falling to Rider, 2-1, at home last Wednesday. The Hornets travel to UMBC on Friday before welcoming the Colonials on Sunday afternoon. DSU's offense is led by Paige Wilcox (3g) and Chelsea Boursiquot (2g, 1a) with six and five points, respectively. Goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky has made 56 saves and allowed 14 goals for a .800 save percentage and a 1.72 goals-against average. GW shut out Delaware State, 5-0, at home last season.
