
GW Women's Tennis Tops UMBC, 6-1

BALTIMORE, Md. - The George Washington women's tennis team earned its first win of 2014 on Sunday evening with a dominating 6-1 decision over UMBC at the indoor 40 West Racquet Club.
GW (1-3) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. The Colonials then rolled to singles victories at Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 to top UMBC (2-4) in convincing fashion.
In doubles action, the No. 1 duo of senior Isabella Escobar and freshman Taylor Nederlander defeated Olga Baikulova and Isabel Aldunate, 8-5. In the No. 2 match, rookie Grace Egger and sophomore Lana Robins earned an 8-3 win over Mariami Dolashvili and Josefin Stange-Jonsson.
Robins then limited Baikulova to four games in a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 1 singles spot, and senior Leah Pascarella earned a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Kim Berghaus in the No. 2 match. In fourth-flight action, sophomore Egle Jakuciunaite downed Isabel Aldunate, 6-4, 6-4, and Nederlander defeated Madlena Kurasz, 6-1, 2-6 (6) at the No. 5 spot. Egger topped Stange-Jonsson for the second time of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-4 win in No. 6 singles.
GW returns to action on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 with consecutive matches against Atlantic 10 foes Massachusetts and Fordham in New York City.
