BRONX, N.Y. - The George Washington women's soccer team battled Fordham to a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening at the Rams' Jack Coffey Field.
It marks the first double-overtime contest and first draw of the season for the Colonials, who move to 7-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Atlantic 10 action.
GW's attack came out strong, outshooting Fordham, 20-14, for its second-most shots this season. Sophomore MacKenzie Cowley took a game-high five shots while freshman Brittany Cooper took three shots.
GW took the lead over Fordham (6-5-1, 0-1-1 A-10) just before halftime on a goal from Cooper, assisted by junior Sydney Morris. With two minutes to play in the first frame, junior Kristi Abbate fired a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar, Morris headed the rebound down to an open Cooper, who buried a shot in front of net to put the Colonials up 1-0 at the 43:00 mark.
It was a back-and-forth fight on both sides of the field in the second half when Fordham's Natalie Sims scored the equalizer with just over 20 minutes to play in regulation when she settled a pass from Ally Doyle 20-yards out, found space and curled the ball into the right side of the net.
GW redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn came up with two big stops to preserve the tie when she punched out a Rams' corner kick and came up with the ball, then thwarted a one-on-one attempt by Kelsey Dougherty Howard as she directed the ball out of the box.
The Colonials took eight of the nine shots attempted in 20 minutes of extra time, including five in the second overtime period. Abbate had a good opportunity in the first overtime with a shot from outside the top right corner of the box at 105:57, but Rams' goalkeeper Ally White game up with the diving game-saving stop. With 42 seconds before the clock expired, senior Madison Davis fired a shot from the left side, but it went just wide of the left post.
Horn made four saves in goal. The Buff and Blue held a 5-4 advantage over the Rams in corner kicks.
GW returns home to host Massachusetts on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the GW Soccer Field at the Mount Vernon Campus. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
