WASHINGTON - The GW women's soccer team fell to Dayton, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field at the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Flyers (9-8-1, 5-2-0 A-10) scored two goals in the first half and added another in the second frame as the Colonials (10-5-1, 3-3-1 A-10) were handed their first and only loss at home this season. The Buff and Blue wrapped action on their home turf with a notable record of 7-1-0.
Sophomore MacKenzie Cowley took a team-high three shots, putting all of them on target, and senior Meg Murphy added two attempts. Despite not being able to find the back of the net, GW fired off 12 shots throughout the match and outshot the visitors, 6-5, in the second half.
The Flyers got on the scoreboard at the 20:19 mark after GW redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn made a diving save, but the Flyers' Ashley Campbell collected the rebound right in front of the net and pushed the ball into the lower right corner.
Campbell connected again to put Dayton up 2-0 just under 14 minutes later when Nicole Waters sent the ball inside the box from the top right corner and Campbell beat the defense and found the back of the right side of the goal. In the 87th minute, Waters sent a cross from the left side into the box where Kathleen Golterman settled the pass and put the ball in the bottom middle of the net for the third and final goal.
GW had a few good looks in the contest and forced Flyers' goalkeeper Heather Betancourt to make four saves on the day. Murphy's header 1:12 into action off of a long ball from classmate Alex Brothers went just wide of the net. Later, Cowley carried the ball up the field and found herself in a one-on-one with Betancourt, but ultimately could not find the net.
Horn matched her career-high with six saves between the posts in 90 minutes of work.
GW travels to face Saint Louis for its regular-season finale on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET looking to clinch a bid to the A-10 Championship for the second straight year.
