WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer team travels to Richmond, Virginia, this Saturday for a 7 p.m. match against VCU at Sports Backers Stadium.
The Colonials (10-3-1) look to take over sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10 as they are currently tied with the Rams in the league standings with identical 3-1-1 records.
GW is coming off of a 2-0 weekend in which it shut out Davidson and Richmond, both by 1-0 scores, at home to extend its unbeaten record at the GW Soccer Field at the Mount Vernon Campus to 7-0-0. With the win over the Spiders on Sunday, the Colonials reached their first 10-win season in 11 years.
Goalkeeper Miranda Horn, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, ranks second in the conference and 43rd in NCAA Division I in goals-against average (0.71), and she is second in the league and 32nd in the nation save percentage (.864). As a unit, GW leads the A-10 in fewest goals allowed (10) and goals-against average (0.70), which good for 36th nationally, and is tied for second with seven shutouts on the season.
Sophomore MacKenzie Cowley (6g, 2a) and junior Kristi Abbate (3g, 4a) pace the Buff and Blue offense with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Redshirt junior Nicole Belfonti (3g, 1a) has tallied seven points, while senior Meg Murphy (2g, a1) and freshman Brittany Cooper (2g, 1a) have each recorded five points.
VCU (7-4-4) welcomes GW after going 1-0-1 at home last weekend. The Rams first settled for a scoreless double-overtime draw with Richmond on Friday before defeating Davidson, 1-0, on Sunday. Maren Johansen leads the VCU attack with eight goals and two helpers for 18 points, and Alex Gogolin (3g, 2a) and Aharon Wojcik (3g, 1a) have chipped in eight and seven points, respectively. Goalkeeper Emma Kruse has played all 1,430 minutes between the posts, allowing 19 goals and compiling a .729 save percentage with eight shutouts on the year.
