WASHINGTON - Junior defender Emily Brown scored her first career goal in notable fashion on Friday afternoon when her penalty kick proved to be the game-winner as the George Washington women's soccer team shut out Atlantic 10 newcomer Davidson, 1-0, at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Following a hand ball by Davidson (4-10-1, 1-3-0 A-10) inside the box in the 37th minute of action, Brown stepped up and buried the penalty shot in the lower right corner of the net to put the Colonials on the scoreboard. With its sixth shutout of the season, GW improves to 9-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in A-10 play while also remaining perfect at home with a 6-0-0 mark.
The Colonials outshot the Wildcats, 10-6, for the match, including a 7-1 advantage in the first half, and held an 8-4 lead in corner kicks.
GW had some good looks in front of the goal throughout the contest, beginning with a header by redshirt junior Nicole Belfonti off of a corner kick by senior Alex Brothers at 24:17, but her attempt went just over the crossbar. A little over 10 minutes later, rookie Ingrid DiClemente nearly put the Buff and Blue up, 2-0, when she found herself open at the top of the box, but her shot went wide left.
The Colonials opened the second frame with three consecutive corner kicks and a bullet from junior Kristi Abbate at 47:02 from the left side, but goalkeeper Rachel Locke made the save for Davidson. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn set aside three shots between the posts for GW on the day and came up with big stops on Wildcats' second-half corner kicks.
Senior Elizabeth Casey, Belfonti and DiClemente all took a game-high two shots. Locked made two saves for Davidson in goal.
GW returns to the pitch on Sunday when it welcomes Richmond for a 3:30 p.m. kick off. The squad will honor Brothers, Casey, Madison Davis, Taylor Katz, MacKenzie McIndoe, Sydney Morris and Meg Murphy in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the match.
