WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball opened its home schedule by splitting a doubleheader with visiting Drexel on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW (3-7) won the first game, 8-0, in five innings before dropping the nightcap, 3-2.
Freshman Meghan Rico earned the win in game one after allowing just one hit in five innings of work. She fanned two batters while yielding three walks.
After a scoreless first inning, senior Tara Fogarty led off the bottom of the second with a double down the left field line. A single by classmate Autumn Taylor sent Fogarty to third base, and both were driven in on a two-run double by freshman Morgan Matetic.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Colonials erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Fogarty once again started off the sequence, this time drawing a full-count walk. Senior Amanda Zakeri entered as a pinch runner and stole second before scoring on a RBI single by Taylor to push the lead to 3-0.
After a sacrifice bunt, Drexel's catcher committed a throwing error during a double-steal attempt, allowing Taylor to score from third base to push the lead to 4-0. Two more errors in the inning opened the door to three additional runs to make the score 7-0.
Rico allowed just one hit in the fifth before retiring the side. In the bottom half of the fifth, Fogarty sparked the game-winning sequence by leading off with an infield single. A walk and sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out, and the bases became loaded when Matetic drew a walk. Senior Chelsea Lenhart reached on error, driving in Fogarty to clinch the game, 8-0 in five innings.
In the nightcap, the Colonials offense continued its hot hitting in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Victoria Valos blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to stake the Colonials an early 2-0 lead.
Drexel (2-6) cut the deficit to one in the third inning, plating a run on a Colonials' fielding error. The Dragons added the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning via a throwing error and a RBI single.
The Colonials loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to capitalize, dropping the nightcap, 3-2.
