WASHINGTON - George Washington incoming men's basketball freshman Joe McDonald was selected to the 2012 PARADE All-America Team on Sunday, May 27.
McDonald, who signed a National Letter of Intent in April to join GW for the 2012-13 season, is the lone Atlantic 10 recruit among the 40 scholastic players from across the nation chosen to PARADE's All-America Team, which was first published by the magazine in 1957.
"Joe had an amazing senior season and is greatly deserving of the recognition," said Coach Mike Lonergan. "I'm happy that he and his family get to enjoy and share this prestigious honor."
The 6-foot-1-inch guard from Lorton, Va., starred at the Landon School in Bethesda, Md., where he earned First Team All-Met honors from The Washington Post in both 2011 and 2012. The 43rd-rated point guard prospect in the nation according to ESPN, McDonald averaged 22.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block as a senior in 2012, highlighted by 49-point, 18-rebound effort against conference rival Episcopal. He was a finalist for the 2012 ESPNHS Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year award, and was a three-time First Team All-Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) selection.
McDonald is one of five heralded signees in Coach Lonergan's first recruiting class at GW, along with Patricio Garino, Kevin Larsen, Paris Maragkos and Kethan Savage.
The quintet will join the rest of their Colonials' teammates at GW later this summer, and the squad is scheduled to begin its 10-practice allotment ahead of August's 11-day tour of Italy in late July.
"I'm excited and anxious to get the incoming freshmen and returning players back on campus for summer workouts and our practices for the Italy trip," said Coach Lonergan. "It'll be a great opportunity for them to grow as players, for us to grow as a team, and for us to represent GW as ambassadors for the game of basketball."
