WASHINGTON - Freshman Samantha Dos Santos drove in the lone run of the game in the fifth inning and senior Kara Clauss tossed a five-hit shutout as the George Washington softball team defeated Siena, 1-0, on Sunday morning at the Colonial Classic.
With two outs and a runner on first base, senior Lauren Wilson and Dos Santos singled back-to-back to drive in freshman Becca Garlinger for the game's only run.
Siena threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out on a double and two walks, but Clauss induced consecutive groundouts to escape the jam.
Clauss struck out three in her complete game win, while Jessika-Jo Sandrini suffered the tough-luck loss for the Saints, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six.
Later in the day, the Colonials completed Friday's suspended game against Army, which was postponed due to rain in the top of the seventh with the score tied at 4-4.
Neither team managed a run in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. With a runner on third and one out in the top of the eighth, Army shortstop April Ortenzo singled through the left side to drive in the winning run.
The Colonials (2-9) return to action on Wednesday, when they host Towson at 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
