BALTIMORE - The George Washington softball team rallied late, but it was not enough to overcome a six-run deficit in a 7-4 loss to UMBC on Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.

With the game tied at 1-1, the Retrievers scored four runs in the third inning and two in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Colonials fought back with three in the top of the sixth to pull within three, but they could get no closer.

UMBC (13-14) struck first when senior Katie Ferguson led off the second inning with a single down the left field line, stole second, and scored on a base hit by freshman Kaila Balatgek. Three GW walks in the top of the third loaded the bases, and senior Lauren Wilson came home with the tying run on a wild pitch, but the Colonials stranded the other runners on base.

The Retrievers batted around in the bottom of the inning, as five straight batters reached base to start the frame, and they added two in the fourth on a home run by sophomore Caitlin Chance to make it 7-1.

GW (9-20) took advantage of three UMBC errors in the top of the sixth, including one that allowed two runners to score, and junior Sandi Moynihan followed with a pinch-hit home run, her first of the season, to pull within three, 7-4. The Colonials threatened again in the seventh, getting two on base, but could not push a run across the plate.

Freshman Samantha Dos Santos went 2-for-3 to pace GW offensively, while Chance led the Retrievers with a 2-for-2 effort to go along with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman Miranda Clark (2-2) allowed one run on five hits and struck out six in five innings to earn the win for UMBC. Senior Kara Clauss (6-12) suffered the loss for GW after surrendering five runs on six hits in two innings of work.

The Colonials return to action on Thursday, when they host Drexel at 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
