WASHINGTON - Fueled by an aggressive offense and a virtually flawless defense, the George Washington women's soccer team rolled past Robert Morris, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field. In a clash of the Colonials, GW (2-3) picked up its first-ever win over the visitors in convincing fashion, including four second half goals.
"The performance by our upperclassmen is a testament to their leadership," said head coach Tanya Vogel. "The passion and heart I saw on the field today was incredible; I couldn't be happier."
Senior Sierra Smidinger totaled a career-high five points with two goals and an assist. Junior Molly Bruh tallied a career-high four points on the day, in addition to her scoring her first career goal. Sophomore Alex Neal and junior Adriana Moya each recorded a goal and an assist.
GW fired a season-high 16 shots and tallied four corner kicks, and its defensive efforts were equally impressive. The Buff and Blue held Northeast Conference leading scorer Ayana Davis, who entered the match with six goals in RMU's (4-3) six games, to one shot over the 90 minutes.
In first-half action, Moya registered the lone goal off midfield passes from freshman Elizabeth Casey and Smidinger. RMU was limited to a mere four first-period shots.
Five minutes into the second period, Neal found her way around RMU goalkeeper Peyton Burns and shielded away a defender to push the ball into net to give GW a 2-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Bruh assisted Smidinger's first strike for a three-goal advantage.
Bruh then notched a goal of her own when she sent in a shot from the far left side of the field that caromed off the upper right post into net. Her second helper was a perfect pass from the midfield to Smidinger, who headed the ball into the right side of goal.
The home squad almost came away with its first shutout of the season, but Robert Morris midfielder Holly Sieradzki converted a penalty shot in the 84th minute. It was RMU's second spot attempt of the day as GW senior goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe stopped Rachel Sebbens' penalty in the 59th minute.
GW heads to Annapolis, Md., next weekend for the Navy Invitational. The Colonials will take on Davidson on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m., followed by a match with Bryant on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
