Colonials' Late-Inning Rally Falls Short Against Patriots

WASHINGTON, DC -- Freshman Chelsea Lenhart singled in two runs to put George Washington within one run of visiting George Mason in the bottom of the sixth on Wednesday at Mount Vernon Softball Field. The Patriots added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 6-4 victory.
GW (14-25-1) got on the board in the first inning courtesy of an Autumn Taylor two-out RBI when she singled in Lauren Wilson, who had reached on a triple to the gap in right center.
George Mason (15-24) took the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs with two outs on a walk and three hits. The Patriots extended their lead in their half of the fifth by three, and put pressure on GW's defense by playing small ball and adding a timely triple.
The Colonials added a run in the fifth as senior Katie Terrazas singled in Lenhart from third. Lenhart singled to right field with one out in the inning and took third on Wilson's fielder's choice.
With two on and two out in the sixth, Lenhart hit behind the runners to get the Colonials within a run, 5-4. Wilson drew out a two-out walk, but Terrazas flied out to center to end the inning.
GMU led off the seventh with a bunt single that eventually came around to score the Patriots' sixth run.
The teams split the two-game season series, each winning on the road. Mason holds a 9-5 advantage in the all-time series between the teams.
The Colonials play their final home games of the season this weekend when they host the Saint Louis Billikens in an A-10 doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday. GW will honor two seniors, pitcher Ali Pardo and shortstop Terrazas, prior to the start of game one. Mount Vernon Softball Field is located at 2100 Foxhall Road in northwest Washington.
