WASHINGTON, DC -- In the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, the George Washington softball team was able to cut James Madison two-run lead in half on Wednesday at Mount Vernon Field, but flied out to end the game, 2-1. The Dukes jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Colonials in game one, pulling out a 5-2 win in game one. The losses drop the Colonials to 13-21-1 on the season, while the Dukes improve to 27-17.
In the first game, the Colonials fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first as the Dukes' four hits found holes in the GW defense.
GW was able to take back a run in the bottom half of the inning after getting a lead of hit from freshman Chelsea Lenhart. Autumn Taylor singled in Lenhart for the first Colonial run of the game.
Tara Fogarty followed with a lead off hit in the second inning, and advanced to second on a Chelsea Curcio sacrifice bunt to the left side of the infield. Julie Orlandi scored Fogarty on a hit up the middle and took second as JMU's centerfielder threw to the plate to cut JMU's lead in half.
The Colonials picked up two hits in the third and fourth innings but left four batters on base. JMU added an insurance run in the sixth inning, for the 5-2 win.
Heidi Penna went six innings in the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking two batters. Kara Clauss threw one inning for the Colonials, striking out one and walking one.
In the second game, Penna got the start, recording six straight fly outs. JMU pushed across a run to take the 1-0 lead. They added a single run in the fourth on two hits.
Wilson led off the seventh inning with a single up the middle, followed by Katie Terrazas picking up her third hit of the game to put runners at first and second. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, during Sandi Moynihan's at bat. Moynihan picked up a RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 2-1 JMU. The Colonials were unable to score Terrazas, as the game ended on a ground out to third.
Penna took the loss in three and a third innings of work, allowing both runs on four hits. Freshman Courtney Martin tossed two and two-third innings for GW. Martin gave up two hits and walked one. Clauss pitched the seventh inning, striking out one.
The Colonials head on the road this weekend, first taking on a 4-27 Rhode Island team, winless in the Atlantic 10. GW and URI will play a two-day two game series starting with a 3:00 pm start on Friday, April 22, followed by a 12:00 pm game on Saturday.
