
Softball Splits Doubleheader at Hampton

HAMPTON, VA - The George Washington University softball team matched their win total from 2010 when the Colonials (6-4) defeated the Hampton Pirates (5-13) in the first game 5-4 in eight innings on Tuesday. The Pirates came back to take the second game of the doubleheader, 4-3, from the Colonials at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex.
In the first game, Hampton jumped on the board first in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits and a GW fielding error.
GW answered in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with singles from Katie Terrazas, Lauren Wilson and Tara Fogarty. As Kara Clauss stood at the plate, Terrazas scored on a wild pitch while Wilson scored on a throwing error by the Pirates catcher. Clauss brought home Fogarty on a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the score at 3-all.
The Colonials took the lead in the sixth. GW showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks and loading the bases on a fielder's choice. Wilson scored on a fielding error on the Pirates right fielder during Autumn Taylor's at-bat. Hampton tied it again at 4-4, in the bottom of the seventh, on a RBI double down the leftfield line.
Wilson scored the 5-4 game-winner, after being placed on second to start the eighth inning. Fogarty successfully pushed Wilson to third on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Wilson scored on a wild pitch during Taylor's at-bat.
In the second game, GW scored first on a Taylor RBI single to right center. Hampton answered in the bottom of the first inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. The Pirates extended their lead by two runs in the third inning to 4-1, on one hit, one walk and a hit-by-pitch.
GW started a comeback scoring one run in the sixth and the seventh, taking advantage of three walks and two hits, and scoring runs on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
Clauss (5-2) started the first game for her third complete-game win of the season. She allowed six hits, four runs (two earned), striking out two and walking one in eight innings of work.
Heidi Penna (1-2) went two and a third innings in the second game, allowing three hits, four runs, walking three and striking out one. Courtney Martin tossed three and two-thirds in relief for the Colonials. Martin allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three.
GW stays on the road as they head to Rock Hill, SC, for the Winthrop/ adidas Invitational, March 11-13. The Colonials will take on Wright State on Friday, March 11 at 11 am, then take on Gardner-Webb under the lights at 7:00 pm.
