GW Softball Splits A-10 Doubleheader at Dayton

DAYTON, OH-- George Washington softball team came from behind to defeat Dayton 5-4 in the first of two games on Saturday at the UD Softball Stadium, but dropped the second in a 10-9 slug-fest. GW goes to 11-11-1 on the season, 3-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while Dayton moves to 11-15, 3-3 on the year.
In the first game, the Colonials overcame a 4-1 deficit to for the 5-4 victory in an eight inning conference contest. GW scored three runs in the top of the seventh on hits by Kristi Saporito, Sandi Moynihan, Lacey Cook and Chelsea Lenhart to tie the game.
The Colonial defense forced extras as starter Heidi Penna retired the side, getting the Fliers on two fly-outs and a lineout in the bottom of the seventh. Moynihan was batted in from second by Katie Terrazas for the game-winning run in the top of the eighth.
In the second game, the Colonials again found themselves down 4-0 before scoring in the third inning. Julie Orlandi scored the first GW run on a double steal as Lenhart took second, and she later scored as Terrazas was caught stealing second.
GW took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs with two outs on the board. Chelsea Curcio singled to keep the inning going and advanced around the bases as Courtney Martin reached on an error and Jordyn O'Donnell took first base on a fielder's choice. Lenhart cleared the bases with a double down the leftfield line. Terrazas then scored Lenhart with her own double to left center, but was left stranded.
The Colonials bats didn't cool in the fifth or sixth innings either, scoring three more runs on three hits and three Fliers' errors.
Dayton got in on the scoring as well in those same innings, tying the game at 9-all. The Fliers scored five runs on three home runs, two of which were multi-run homers.
GW got a two-out double from Lenhart, followed by an intentional wall to Terrazas but Autumn Taylor struck out to end the inning.
Dayton singled in the game-winner with two outs, for the 10-9 conference victory.
Penna (2-4) earned the game one win, tossing 13 and two-thirds innings for GW in two games, allowing 13 runs (seven earned) on 14 hits, striking out 12 and walked four. Ali Pardo (0-1) saw an inning of relief in the second game, allowing one run on one hit and walked one.
GW returns to the East Coast to take on Towson for two games on Tuesday, March 30, in Baltimore, MD. Games at the Towson Center Field are set to start at 3:00 pm.
