WASHINGTON, DC-- The George Washington softball team combined timely hits with strong defense against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials came from behind to win the first game, 5-4, and held the lead to win game two, 6-3, against the Bonnies.
In the first game, St. Bonaventure (3-8, 0-2) got on the board in the third inning when Ashley Snider hit a two-run homerun to left centerfield. The Bonnies advanced their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when they combined two hits and two walks.
Autumn Taylor put GW (9-9, 2-0) on the board in the fourth inning with a towering shot to left center for her first homerun of the season.
The Colonials got hits from Katie Terrazas, Taylor and Lauren Wilson in the bottom of the fifth to score Chelsea Curcio, who got on base on a Bonnie error, cutting the lead in half.
In the bottom of the seventh, Chelsea Lenhart hit a one-out single up the middle, followed by a Terrazas hit down the left field line to move the momentum to the Colonials batters. With two on and two out, Wilson hit a double to right center to the tie the game at 4-all. After Tara Fogarty's walk, Kara Clauss reached base on an error by the Bonnies shortstop to score Wilson for the game-winner.
GW's bats had yet to cool at the start of the second game, taking a quick 2-0 lead after two innings. The Colonials strung together four hits and a walk for the early runs.
Fogarty led off the fourth inning with a single, followed by a walk from Curcio, and a hit from Sandi Moynihan to load the bases for pinch hitter Jordyn O'Donnell. O'Donnell put the ball in play, scoring Fogarty on a fielder's choice for the first run of the inning. Curcio scored a second run on Lenhart's sacrifice fly to right field.
St. Bonaventure made a run at GW in the sixth, posting three runs on three hits and two Colonial miscues.
The Colonials were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs on the board and capitalizing on two Bonnies errors to extend the final score to 6-3.
GW pitchers Heidi Penna and Kara Clauss (8-6) combined to strike out 17 and walk eight St. Bonaventure batters in fourteen innings of work. Clauss picked up the wins, while Penna earned the game two save.
