WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington's Bryan Bynes scored his career-high 16 points in leading the Colonials past visiting Charlotte in an A-10 contest Wednesday night at Charles E. Smith Center. It marked GW's second triumph over the 49ers in an 18-day span to complete a season sweep.
In addition to Bynes' effort, Tony Taylor 15 points and six assists. Freshman Nemanja Mikic celebrated his 20th birthday by sinking three three-pointers en route to an 11-point performance. He also is just one three-point field goal shy of the GW freshman record of 74 (set by SirValiant Brown in 1999-00). Joseph Katuka (10 points) and Aaron Ware (10) were the other Colonials in double-figure scoring.
GW shot an 51.6 percent in the first half in building a 39-28 halftime lead. Bynes contributed 12 first-half points. The Colonials shot 51.9 percent for the game including 42.9 percent from three-point range. Charlotte shot 43.6 percent (24-55) but just 5-of-14 (35.7%) from long range.
After a fairly close first half, GW blew the game open behind a 17-4 run that culminated with a Jabari Edwards dunk to give the Colonials their biggest lead of the game at 54-32 with 14:48 left. Charlotte responded with a 16-5 run of its own to close to within 11 (59-48) on a jumper by Briscoe at the 6:50 mark but would get no closer.
Charlotte (10-17, 2-11 A-10) was led by Chris Braswell and Jamar Briscoe, each with 15 points. Braswell also gathered 10 rebounds for the 49ers.
GW has won its last three games and five of its last seven. The Colonials have also won nine of the last 12 meetings with Charlotte.
