WASHINGTON, DC - Helping local kids was the order of the day at the Verizon Center on Thursday, January 13. GW men's basketball players Lasan Kromah and Daymon Warren, head coach Karl Hobbs and assistant coach Donyell Marshall were helping the Children's Charities Foundation give away more than 1,000 new winter coats for DC-area kids in need.
It's the second year of the coat giveaway and is one of hundreds of projects the Foundation has funded that offers help to at-risk and disadvantaged youth in DC, Maryland and Virginia. The D.C. Children's Trust Fund was instrumental in identifying local organizations serving children in need of a suitable winter coat.
GW Basketball's participation drew the attention of the volunteers in the Verizon Center's main lobby. Local news television cameras trained on the group. Representatives from area charities who arrived to pick up coats exchanged hugs and posed for pictures with them.
The coats were purchased in an arrangement with Lord & Taylor. Dozens of volunteers at the Verizon Center organized the coats by size and gender for distribution to area charities.
The Children's Charities Foundation is the recipient of monies from the BB&T Classic basketball games every December. GW has co-hosted the tournament for 16 years. In that time, the CCF has distributed more than $8 million to more than 100 charities in the DC metro region.
