WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington University today announced its entire 2010-11 men's basketball schedule, which includes the NIT Season Tip-Off and the first game of a home-and-home series against UAB. Details about televised games, which could affect the game times listed, will be announced at a later date.
GW will open the season Nov. 16 in Philadelphia in the 2010 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off against Boston University at Villanova's Pavilion. The GW-BU contest is the first of potentially 14 games against opponents that qualified for the 2010 postseason. If GW gets past BU and Villanova advances past Marist, the Colonials and Wildcats will meet in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Villanova's home court.
The home opener is set for Nov. 29 against UNC Wilmington followed by a short trip to Fairfax to face George Mason (Dec. 1). Both the Patriots (CollegeInsider.com Tournament - CIT), as well as GW's Dec. 18 opponent, Oregon State (College Basketball Invitational - CBI), participated in postseason play last year.
For the second straight season, GW will face Navy in the 16th Annual BB&T Classic as part of a one-day tripleheader at the Verizon Center on Dec. 5. GW and Maryland annually co-host the event which benefits the Children's Charities Foundation of Washington. Other match-ups in the BB&T Classic feature Florida vs. American and Temple vs. Maryland. All three games will be televised by MASN-TV.
The Colonials return to Smith Center to host Towson on Dec. 8, before traveling to the west coast to face Oregon State Dec. 18 at Corvallis, OR. After a home game against East Carolina on Dec. 22, the Colonials travel to Birmingham, AL, to face UAB in a rematch of a 1994 NCAA Tournament first-round contest. A New Year's Eve date with Holy Cross follows the UAB game and GW will begin the 2011 calendar year by visiting Howard on Jan. 2. CIT participant Harvard visits Smith Center Jan. 15.
Under 10th-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW will play at least four games against league opponents that qualified for the 2010 NCAA Tournament field when they face Richmond (twice), Temple and Xavier. Other postseason A-10 opponents include 2010 NIT champion Dayton and NIT quarterfinalist Rhode Island, as well as games against CBI finalist Saint Louis and CBI participant Duquesne.
The A-10 will play a 16-game Conference schedule in 2010-11, which allows teams to face each opponent once and three teams twice. GW will continue to play a home-and-home series against Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Fordham, La Salle, Saint Louis, St. Bonaventure, Temple and a `Senior Day' match-up against Dayton in addition to the home games with Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. GW will travel to Duquesne, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's and Xavier in addition to Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond.
The 2011 A-10 Men's Basketball Championship takes place Mar. 8-13. The top 12 teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the 2011 Men's Basketball Championship. The first-round games of the Championship will be hosted on the campuses of teams seeded #5, #6, #7, and #8 on Tuesday, Mar. 8, 2011. The top four seeded teams (#1-#4) will again receive a bye into the quarterfinal round, scheduled for Friday, Mar. 11 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The Championship game will be held on Sunday, Mar. 13 and televised nationally at 1:00 p.m. on CBS Sports for the second straight year.
The Colonials, 16-15 (6-10 A-10) in 2009-10, return four starters in senior C Joseph Katuka, junior guards Tony Taylor and Aaron Ware, and sophomore guard Lasan Kromah. They will be joined by seven other returnees and the 2010 recruiting class. NBA veteran Donyell Marshall also joins the GW coaching staff in 2010. This season, fans will be greeted by a renovated Smith Center with an all-new exterior, updated concessions concourses and a refurbished box office. In the arena, a larger new state-of-the-art Daktronics scoreboard display will enhance the spectator experience with high-resolution replays and live game stats.
