GW Women's Rowing Race Strong at Head of Potomac

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's rowing team opened the 2010-11 season at home on the Potomac River in the annual Head of the Potomac on Sunday afternoon. The Colonials raced well on a calm and clear Sunday afternoon, placing fourth in both the Open Varsity8 event and the Four with Coxswain event.
"I was happy the way we went out today, we raced really hard both in the morning in the eights and during the afternoon in the fours" said GW head coach Eric Carcich. "We have a long way to go, but today proved to me that we are starting off in a much better place than last year."
The Head of the Potomac is a 2.8 mile race, starting above the Key Bridge and racing downstream to the Roosevelt Bridge.
The Colonials raced two boats in the Open Varsity 8 event, finishing in fourth place with a time of 16:06.00. The crew consisted of coxswain Meghan Kearns, Annie Morse, Morgen Ellis, Lisa VanArsdale, Anna Kaminski, Mary Duff, Anne Kuznicki, Claire Ashcraft and Rachel Roth.
The junior varsity 8 boat finished in ninth place in16:37.6. Coxswain Gabrielle Uzdin led the crew which consisted of Alexandra Hamilton, Madison Townley, Julia Randle, Maryann Grunseth, Bethany Grim, Megan Culberson, Brittany Riley and Christine Popp. Duke had two boats in the race, finishing in first and second place, while Georgetown took third.
In the Four with Coxswain event, the Colonials also had two boats finish in the top six. The first boat, took fourth place with a time of 18:40.90. The sixth-place crew finished with a time of 19:03.20. The Colonials also had boats finish in 10th and 11th place with times of 19:20.5 and 19:23.9, respectively.
"I thought the team did a really good job this summer preparing for this fall season so I am excited to see where we can go this year" said Carcich.
The Colonials return to action at the Occoquan Chase in Woodbridge, VA, on October, 17th.
The George Washington rowing program is based at Thompson Boat Center located at Virginia Ave. and Rock Creek Parkway in northwest Washington.
