Colonials Defeats Gardner-Webb, 1-0, in Battle of GWs

WASHINGTON, DC - Sophomore Adriana Moya scored in her third consecutive game in the GW women's soccer 1-0 victory of over Gardner-Webb, Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials, on a four-game win-streak, improved to 6-3-0, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-5-1.
"We missed her for the first few games and its great to have her back," said head coach Tanya Vogel. "She is so calm on the ball and she has the ability to finish."
Moya scored her third goal of the season in the 65th minute when she dribbled the ball past multiple defenders off an in-bound pass from Sierra Smidinger. Moya shot through the Bulldog defense, putting the ball in the top far corner out of the goalkeeper's reach for the game-winner.
"Our September performance has been outstanding, we can't rest on our laurels," said Vogel. "We have to be confident going into this week of training and determined to get better."
The Colonials take the first-ever meeting between the GW and GWU squads, in a physical game that leads into conference play for both teams. Colonials' goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe collected her first clean sheet of the year, wrapping up two Bulldog shots.
GW attacked right from the start with Moya and Liz Hillin getting the start as forwards. Hillin and Melanie Keer worked the ball up the field to Moya in the 4th minute of action. Moya sent the ball back into the middle of the field to Hillin, who made a dive to head the ball just wide of the goal, catching GWU's goalkeeper out of position.
"Liz is one of our hardest working kids and one of our strongest leaders," said Vogel. "We have needed someone who can help keep possession up top. Liz complements Adriana very well and she did a fantastic job today for us."
Next up for the Colonials is Atlantic 10 Conference action, when Temple comes to Mount Vernon Field on Friday, Oct. 1, with kick-off set for 4:00 p.m. A match-up with Saint Joesph's follows on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
"We'll have to make sure our October performance matches our September performance," said Vogel.
