Colonials Split on Softball Senior Day with Flyers

WASHINGTON, DC-- The George Washington Colonials wrapped up the 2010 season on Saturday, splitting an Atlantic 10 double header with Dayton at Mount Vernon Field. GW (6-39, 3-17 A-10) took game one 7-5, while Dayton (18-36-1, 6-14) took the second game 11-0 in five innings.
In the first game, both teams got on in the first inning but the Colonials were able to up runs in the second, third, forth and fifth.
Freshman Julie Orlandi went 2-4 on the day from the lead off position for the Colonials, also hitting in one run and scoring twice.
Senior Elisa Van Kirk hit a double in the third scoring two runs to help GW's lead increase to 5-4, a lead that the Colonials would never relinquish the rest of the game.
Katie Terrazas also had a two-RBI game, while Amanda Holst and Jordyn O'Donnell each batted in a run.
Kara Clauss took to the circle for the Colonials, tossing three innings in the win. She gave up four runs and struck out two. Heidi Penna threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on two hits and struck out one. Elaine Nescio closed out the last one and one-third innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.
In game two, the Colonials were unable to get any runners past second base. Holst and Jillian Stanley recorded GW's only hits in the game.
Colonial pitchers, Nescio and Penna, combined to give up 11 runs on 12 hits, walking three and striking out one in five innings of work.
