Colonials Drop Two to the Terps, 8-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD-- GW softball was held to three hits in its match-ups against Maryland on Wednesday, falling to the Terps in both games, 8-0.
In the first game, Sandi Moynihan led of the second inning with a base hit, advanced to second on a passed ball but was left stranded. Katie Terrazas collected the other GW hit in the third.
The Colonials also drew three walks from the Terps' starter Kendra Knight in the first game.
Penna threw a complete five-inning game, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs, fanning three.
In the nightcap, freshman Elaine Nescio, in her second career start for GW, lasted only four batters in the first inning but came back in the fourth to finish the game. Nescio finished the night taking the loss in one and a third innings of work, allowing five runs on three hits, two walks and a strike out.
Penna pitched three innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out one.
GW was held to only one hit, by Terrazas in the third inning with two outs to push Kristi Saporito up to third after Saporito got on base by running out a dropped third strike and stealing second. The two were left stranded after Terps pitcher Kerry Hickey got Amanda Holst to ground out.
The Colonials (4-22) host Mount St. Mary's on Thursday for two non-conference match ups starting at 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Softball Field. GW returns to Atlantic 10 Conference play with two games at St. Bonaventure on Saturday, April 10, with first pitch at 2 p.m.
