Opening Day for Women's Rowing at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington Women's Rowing team opened its 2010 spring season last Saturday at the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA, with a strong debut performance. The Colonials saw each of their boats advance to the finals.
The Women's Varsity Eight finished fourth in the petite final, placing 11th overall in a field of 21 crews. The Colonials advanced to the petite finals by finishing third in their heat with a time of 6:48.39.
George Washington's JV Eight delivered a time of 7:04.41 in the finals, finishing fourth overall out of thirteen teams. During the morning trials the women placed second with a time of 6:46.81 to advance to the grand final.
The Women's Novice Eight achieved a sixth place finish out of 17 boats with a time of 7:21.81. The Colonials advanced to the grand final by finishing second in their morning heat, ahead of four other teams.
"It is always good to get opening day under your belt so that we can evaluate where we are right now and figure what we need to work on," said Head Coach Eric Carcich. "I thought all boats raced well across the board but we have much speed to be gained over the coming months. I am looking forward to getting back work on the Potomac."
The Colonials will return to action this weekend when they host the annual George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River in Washington, DC. The two-day regatta takes place in conjunction with the the National Cherry Blossom Festival and will commence on Friday, April 9 and continue through Saturday, April 10. The first race is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Admission is free and spectators can view the races from the waterfront at Washington Harbour near the intersection of Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Ave., NW.
