WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team fell hard against No. 24 Massachusetts Sunday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 double header. The Minutewomen won game one, 17-0, and came back to take the bottom half of the twin bill, 11-0.
The Minutewomen put up four in the first two innings but it was the third inning that was big, as UMass knocked out Colonials' starter Kara Clauss with two on and no outs, with the score at 5-0. GW's Heidi Penna came in to get two outs, but gave up six runs on five hits before Elaine Nescio relieved her to get the third out of the inning.
UMass put four more runs on the board in the fourth inning as UMass' starter Sara Plourde and Bailey Sanders combined to hold the Colonials hitless in five innings of work.
In the second game, Amanda Holst got on base, drawing a lead off walk in the first inning as the Colonials only base runner of the game.
GW threw three pitchers at UMass with Clauss again getting the start. Clauss held the Minutewomen to three runs in three innings but UMass broke open the game in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with one out.
Ali Pardo made her season debut in relief as Clauss moved over to play first base. Pardo got one out but gave up a grand slam homerun before Penna came into end the inning.
UMass tagged Penna for two more runs in the fifth inning in the loss.
The Colonials (4-17, 1-5) will hit the road to face the Saint Louis Billikens Saturday, April 3 for two A-10 match-ups beginning at noon before taking on Southern Illinois at Edwardsville on Sunday.
