NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Sophomore Lauren Wilson hit a solo homerun to right center field in the top of the fourth inning against Virginia to break up the shutout the Cavaliers had over the Colonials in the first game of the University of Virginia Invitational on Friday at Captain's Park at Christopher Newport University. The games were moved to CNU after Virginia's The Park was deemed unplayable earlier in the week.

Sophomore Kara Clauss took the 9-1 loss, tossing three innings giving up eight runs, with five earned, on seven hits. She only gave up one walk and struck out three. Fellow sophomore pitcher Heidi Penna picked up an inning of relief allowing two earned runs in facing eight batters.

Senior Amanda Holst and sophomore Jillian Stanley collected the other two hits against the Cavaliers in the top of the fifth inning.

"I am impressed with how our team played today, especially since we opened the season against high caliber teams like Virginia and Notre Dame," said head coach Kim Staehle. "Tomorrow, I think if we play with more intensity, execute and play our game, we will do well. I hope the team is ready for the challenge."

In game two of the day, GW faced Notre Dame for the first time in program history. The Irish got off to a quick start against the Colonials, posting three runs in the first inning on starting pitcher Clauss.

GW took to the base paths in the first when freshman Julie Orlandi reached base on a passed ball. Sophomore Ali Waterman grounded out, but pushed Orlandi onto second, before Orlandi stole third. The Colonials stranded her at third after two consecutive strikeouts.

ND tacked on two runs in the second and third and one in the fourth before taking the game 8-0 in five innings.

The Colonials (0-2) will face Notre Dame (6-4) for a second time on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Virginia (3-6) at 3 p.m. at CNU's Captain's Park.
