WASHINGTON, DC -- In a wild display of long-range shooting by a pair of freshmen, UNC Wilmington's Tanner Milson game-high 25 points propelled the visiting Seahawks to a 73-69 victory over George Washington in a non-conference game Monday night at Charles E. Smith Center.
GW had a sharp-shooting freshman of its own in Nemanja Mikic. Both Mikic and Milson each hit seven three-pointers as the teams combined for 23 baskets from beyond the arc. Mikic converted 7-13 for his career-high 23 points while Milson connected on 7-9 threes for a game-high 25 points. The GW single-game record for three-pointers made is eight shared by two players including current GW assistant coach, Greg Collucci.
UNC Wilmington (3-3) was led by Milson, one of four Seahawks in double figures along with teammates Chad Tomko and Ahmad Grant, each with 11 points, and Keith Rendelman who recorded a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double.
The Colonials had to overcome a slow start and fell behind by as much as 12 (19-7) on a three-pointer by UNCW's Darryl Felder just nine minutes into the game. GW rallied after Mikic sank the first of his four three-pointers and the Colonials put together a 14-0 run to take a 21-19 lead with 8;45 left in the first half. GW's lead grew to eight at 39-31 late in the first half before settling for a 39-34 lead at the break.
The teams battled through five lead changes in the second half until Milson's sixth three-pointer gave the Seahawks its first lead of the second half at 66-65 with 4:19 left.
GW junior Tony Taylor picked up his fifth foul with 2:07 left and the Colonials trailing by one, 68-67. The Colonials David Pellom was fouled by Felder and converted both ends to give GW a 69-68 edge at the 1:24 mark. Milson answered at the other end with a three-pointer from the right corner to re-take the lead at 71-69 with 57 seconds showing. GW's Joseph Katuka missed a short hook in the lane with 44 ticks left and GW was forced to foul. Bryan Bynes sent Tomko to the line with 16 seconds left and Tomko promptly missed the front end but UNCW rebounded the miss and GW fouled again sending Milson to the line who calmly converted both free throws for the final 73-69 margin with 11.1 seconds left.
GW (2-3) next takes the short ride to Fairfax, VA, to face another CAA team in George Mason (4-2) on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Patriot Center.
