WASHINGTON, DC - GW women's soccer played a scoreless first half against Duquesne in a physical battle, but fell 1-0, on Sunday at Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials fall to 9-9-0 on the season, 3-6-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Dukes move to 9-8-1, 6-3-0 in the A-10.
The Colonials started nine seniors on the final home game of the 2010 season, including goalkeeper Molly Jensen and forward Libby Osher getting their first career starts. Jensen was able wrap up six shots from Duquesne's forwards.
"Molly did a fantastic job today," said head coach Tanya Vogel. "I know she's disappointed because she wanted to get the win and get the shutout. She has improved as a keeper and made some great saves today."
GW outshot Duquesne 15 to 11, including nine shots in the first half, with five shots on goal. Quite a few drives by the speedy Colonials forwards were erased by offside calls.
"It could have been that we were playing for ourselves today, that there was no pressure," said Vogel. "They did an amazing job, and I am really proud of them."
Duquesne capitalized on a foul called in the 67th minute, when Michelle Mooren sailed a free kick into the top near corner over Jensen.
In the second half, the Colonials started a drive with sophomore Adriana Moya, dribbling the ball up the field, passed it to freshman Claire Haft to take it in to the box. Haft toed it to Alex Neal but the play was waved off due to off-sides.
Both Neal and Haft had three shots in the game for the Colonials, while Molly Bruh and Jillian Morgan had two shots each.
