WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington University men's basketball assistant coach Darrell Brooks has resigned in order to accept the head coach position at Bowie State University. Brooks graduated from Bowie State in 1979 and served as an assistant coach there in 1984-85. Bowie State, which competes in Division II, is located 17 miles east of Washington, DC, in Bowie, MD.
"I have spent eight tremendous years as an assistant at George Washington and am very thankful to Coach Karl Hobbs for giving me the opportunity," said Brooks. "I will miss the players, staff, and university family very much and wish them nothing but success in the future. I am extremely happy and honored to have been the assistant coach at George Washington University during one of its most successful eras. I am extremely blessed and honored to return to my alma mater as Head Men's Basketball Coach. My family and I are elated to be back `home.'
During Brooks' tenure, the Colonials appeared in three NCAA Tournaments and twice won the Atlantic 10 Conference title (2005 and 2007).
Brooks was the first assistant coach hired by GW head coach Karl Hobbs in May, 2001. "We wish Darrell nothing but the best," Hobbs said. "He will be an outstanding head coach. It's a wonderful opportunity for him to return to his alma mater. He excelled in game preparation and getting us ready for every game and his ability to match wits [with opposing coaches' strategy] is without peer. He has been here since day one and we will miss him dearly."
Before coming to GW in `01, Brooks served assistant coaching stints at Central State University in Ohio, William & Mary, American, George Mason and Loyola (MD) before taking a head coaching position at Western Maryland College in 2000.
