ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University returned to action Friday at Barcroft Park and dropped a 12-6 decision to the Xavier Musketeers. Senior Chris Neary got the start and threw six inning and allowed three earned runs.
The Colonials got on the board first when Sean Rockey walked and Tim Reeves singled up the middle. With Rockey safely getting to third, the Musketeers tried to get Reeves at second, but third baseman John McCambridge overthrew second base allowing Rockey to score.
The lead doubled in the fourth inning when Rockey continued his hot hitting and connected for his 10th home run of the season over the left field wall. George Washington also got runners on first and third after the home run, but was unable to add any more runs to their lead. This gave the Colonials a 2-0 lead after four innings.
George Washington held that lead until the fifth inning when the Musketeers scored three runs to claim the lead. Xavier first baseman Ben Thomas hit his 13th home run of the season and left fielder Steve Brown collected an RBI single.
Xavier added runs in the seventh inning with a single tally and then opened up their lead with five eighth inning runs to extend their lead to 9-4. Junior Tom Zebroski added his eighth home run of the season in the Colonial half of the eighth and senior Doug Eizen hit his first home run of the season in the ninth, but it was not enough for the Colonials in the contest.
The Colonials will return to the field tomorrow when they face the same Musketeer squad at 1:00 p.m at Barcroft Park. George Washington will be celebrating "Senior Day" to honor the 10 departing Colonial seniors.
